Hemanti at her home in Jaunpur district, Uttar Pradesh. In 2013, Hemanti’s daughter Sumana, 20, was repeatedly gangraped by three men. She was then forced to walk naked in the Indian summer heat. They then murdered her. Sumana’s naked body was found two days later, with cuts and acid burns on her face to prevent her from being identified. All the three perpetrators are in now in prison. Their respective families have made several attempts to pressure Hemanti to withdraw the case.
Shanti, 15, was called out of school by a trusted middle aged neighbor. She was then raped and threatened with murder to keep quiet. At the time of this photo she was seven months pregnant. She received medical care with support from a local NGO in Varanasi and gave birth to a son in March 2015.
Shabina (20) at her house near Kolkata. Shabina was raped eight years ago by a man from her community. Her family and neighbors then forced her to marry him. As a result of the rape, she gave birth to a son, Ali (7). She was not accepted as a wife by her perpetrator. A year after the incident, her family lodged a police complaint and took the perpetrator to court. Shabina makes puffed rice for a living, working up to 16 hours a day and earns Rs.400 (7$) a week.

Priya, 24 was on her way back home from office, when she was gagged by two men from her neighbourhood and taken to an un-constructed piece of land. School children found her body two days later in a semi-naked condition with ants coming out of her eyes and mouth.
Kaveri, 35, was promised a job in Delhi by an acquaintance after her husband died in an accident. Kaveri hailing from rural Andhra Pradesh, was 8 months pregnant when she came to Delhi and was sold for $3000 by the acquaintance to a couple. Nine days after giving birth to her daughter, Kaveri was raped for two days by the male partner to prepare her for flesh-trade. Her new-born daughter was also taken away.
Beena, 15, was going to be married in eight days, when a distant relative in his a his forties, with a wife and daughter, volunteered to take her to meet her mother. Instead, she was abducted and taken to a neighboring district in Uttar Pradesh. There, she was raped repeatedly for weeks. The police rescued her after her grandfather filed a complaint. The perpetrator was apprehended and is in jail. The perpetrator and his family blackmailed Beena to withdraw the case.
Vinita, 17, was abducted by a man belonging to the Brahmin community while she was on her way back home from school in Robertsganj, Uttar Pradesh. She was taken to a nearby pond and raped. Vinita's family supported her, immediately taking her for medical tests and to lodge a police complaint. The perpetrator has been on the run since. As a result of the trauma and stigma from the incident, Vinita has dropped out of school.
In 2011 Rajani, 15, was repeatedly raped by a man from her village after she had gone to the forest to defecate. Rajani’s mother found her bleeding in the forest. She was then immediately taken to the police station to lodge a complaint. The police refused to file a complaint, abusing Rajani’s mother instead. Rajani is now suffers from PTSD and hasn't spoken since the incident. In India, almost 60 percent of the rural households do not have access to toilets making women vulnerable to sexual assault.
Nilima, 8, was in her neighbourhood to celebrate the festival of Holi. She was nabbed by a group of boys and taken to a nearby paddy field and gangraped by four boys. Her body was found two days later in three pieces with her genitals missing to remove evidence of rape.
Shamima Begum’s six year old daughter was raped and brutally murdered by a neighbor in March 2015. The girl’s body was found in a nearby field at the Rajmahal district in Jharkhand. The girl had several marks on her body and her arms were broken. The perpetrator’s father later committed suicide by jumping in front of a train out of shame.
Parama, 23, the mother of a four year old, works at a hospital in Kolkata as a nurse. During her divorce proceedings, Parama's ex-husband called her to his house on the pretext of discussing the divorce proceedings. She was pursuaded to meet with him. Parama's ex-husband then raped her in front of his four friends, who were invited so that they could witness her humiliation. She filed a complaint and got him arrested in 2013. Her perpetrator is currently out on bail and has remarried.
Mohini, 26, belongs to an urban middle class family and lives at a metropolitan city in India. At 17, she was gangraped by her ex-boyfriend and his three friends after she had broken up with him and publicly slapped him for cheating on her. Mohini was speaking on the phone with her best friend while walking back home when she was attacked. Her friend later gave verdict in court against the perpetrators as he could recognise the familiar voices.
Junaki, 13, was raped in a cow-shed by a 63-year-old retired school teacher near Shahganj in Uttar Pradesh in June 2016. The man is a habitual sexual offender and has committed many sexual offences but no one from the community has come forward to file any official reports against him. The man belongs to the upper caste and is well connected with the local politicians and the police.
Taslima, 22, was married in an orthodox Muslim family in Uttar Pradesh. She was not allowed to make friends or even go out of the house by her in-laws. Soon after marriage she was subjected to physical violence and rape. She was even raped by foreign objects and was never given any medical attention. Hearing her screams one day, neighbours intervened and admitted her to a hospital. Taslima is currently divorced and is training herself to be a tailor and is not ashamed of what has happened to her.
